The Shed

In order to build a 32' boat, you need a shed.  And I need a shed that is sturdy, roomy and cheap.  I found plans for a Bow Roof Shed at Stimson's Marine (see list of related links below).  A quick web search for Bow Roof Sheds reveled that a lot of people are quite happy with the shed design.  So I've ordered a set of plans and hope to begin construction of my shed in March.  Here are some pictures of this shed type.  A quick google search will show that this is a very popular shed type for boat construction/repair and storage.

The search for a plan

Mysteria is the name I have chosen for my boat.  She will be built from  Ted Brewer's Mystic 32' plans (See link below).

I have been looking over boat plans for about eight years and I have oscillated between wanting a fast multi-hull cruiser to a stout and heavy mono-hull.  In the end I compromised and chose a fast multi-hull cruiser. See the list of design links below.

During those eight years, I have cruised in four different boats.  The first was a Macgregor V21.  In the end it turned out to be too small.  My next boat was a Coronado 23'.  It was a fine cruiser and suited my wants and needs well.  Alas, in the end I succumbed to "bigger boat-itis" and traded up to a Coronado 25'.  The Coronado 25' taught me that I want to be able to trailer my boat to different locations.  So I traded back down to a Macgregro V222.

I want to build her myself.  And I knew I wanted a boat capable of coastal cruising but that alone leaves a lot of room for variation.  My journey for a boat plan took me from multi-hulls to proas and I finally settled on the Sharpie.

Why the Sharpie?  Well I knew I wanted something that was shoal, cheap to build, easy enough for a rank armature to build, big enough for my family to sail comfortably and safe for coastal cruising.  AND!   The boat had to be trailerable.  That limits the beam to 8'.  Ted Brewer's Sharpie seemed  the best set of compromises.
